We had sold our home and all was\nproceeding well. Having come under considerable pressure to agree some\nupgrades, we paid almost \u00a314,000 upfront for granite kitchen tops and Siemens\nappliances. We were told that this would enable the purchase and completion to\ngo through on time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithin hours\nof the coronavirus lockdown starting, the person who had agreed to buy our\nhouse pulled out. With no possible way to find a new buyer in the current\nclimate, we, in turn, have had to withdraw from the Redrow purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe assumed\nthat we would receive our \u00a314,000 back, but the company has refused. It claims\nits terms and conditions state that all items ordered are non-refundable. I\nhave asked for evidence these items were ordered or installed by Redrow but\nthey are unwilling to share this information. The site in question in Ebbsfleet\nValley has been shut, so no work is happening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miles Brignall\nreplied to say nobody should pay up front for property upgrades like this in\nany circumstances and particularly during the current crisis. But it\u2019s not just\nRedrow who indulge in this legal but sharp practice. What happens if your buyer\ndoesn\u2019t pull out and you plan to go ahead with the deal as you are sure your\njob is safe but the builder goes bust? Sadly this is all too often the case as\nthere are thousands of small building firms and many go bust each year taking\nwith them the deposits for homes to be built or altered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s not\njust builders it\u2019s plasterers, brickies, roofers, glaziers, bathroom and\nkitchen fitters who may ask for cash up front or for materials. There is one\nway to check them out and that\u2019s on Checkaco where you key in their name and up\ncomes their business history for just \u00a33.85.
