Worse still are builders who have taken hefty\nupfront payments from customers and then declare their business has gone west\nalong with the deposits which are often thousands of pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anna Sorokin con woman<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sentenced to four years in New York\u2019s Rikers Island state\npenitentiary in 2019 and fined \u00a320,000, Russian born con woman Anna Sorokin is\ncurrently awaiting deportation to Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in Domodedovo near Moscow in 1991 Anna wanted to become\nrich and famous. She achieved both of these ambitions before her arrest on several\ncharges of larceny and one of theft in 2017. Her family moved from Russia to\nGermany when she was a teenager and following school she gained an internship\nat Purple magazine in Paris. From this she was able to make contacts in the\nfashion world which gave her an entry to the well heeled and well connected\nchanging her name to Anna Delvey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anna had arrived in New York in 2013 to work for Purple\nmagazine although whether she was on the payroll was disputed. She blagged her\nway into the publishing crowd based on her previous connections and after\nmeeting a fashion photographer she illegally used his credit card to fund her\nlifestyle. Her next step was simple: she announced to friends and businesses\nshe was fabulously rich and would soon inherit a fortune from her wealthy\nfather in Germany. All a lie of course \u2013 but it opened doors and hotels,\nrestaurants and stores were happy to grant her large amounts of credit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To enable her to pay some of the bills she obtained a\nhundred thousand pound bank loan based on her supposed millionaire status.\nUsing this cash she continued to live in hotels and dine out at expensive\nrestaurants grandly announcing to her sycophantic friends she was to open the\nAnna Delvey Foundation \u2013 a sort of posh arts centre in the city. By now the\nbanks and hotels were closing in Anna persuaded some gullible friends to pay\nfor a luxury holiday in Morocco on the promise it was to promote the\nfoundation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Running out of credit Sorokin was eventually arrested at a\nrehab centre and the full details of her crimes quickly unfolded. Various\nfriends told of how she had borrowed money on the promise to repay the next day\nas her credit card wasn\u2019t working, hotels listed unpaid bills of tens of\nthousands of dollars and banks and credit companies rued the day they granted\nher hundreds of thousands of dollars of credit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The joke is Anna may well end up being rich \u2013 she is already\nfamous \u2013 as TV and film companies have lined up to tell her story and although\nshe is unlikely to be paid directly by the media she will be able to publish\nher own story and sell it to the highest bidder back in Germany. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a story that has hit the headlines around the world\nsince Anna is unrepentant and believes she did nothing wrong as only rich\npeople and institutions were affected. She says she should have known better to\nlend her money \u2013 but many of those she conned were friends \u2013 and there lies a\nuniversal crime perpetuated by con artists the world over. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have all had a friend or a relative who has asked to\nborrow money due to a crisis and have paid it back. Some of us have had a\nfriend who in a restaurant realises they\u2019ve left their company credit card at\nhome and can\u2019t pay their fair share but promise to repay you the following day \u2013\nbut then fails to do so as the company credit card has been rejected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

BBC Rip-off Britain presenter ripped-off<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Unauthorised payment card fraud costs the public more than\nhalf a billion pounds a year with the commonest form taking the form of\nscammers using stolen credit and debit cards to withdraw money from cash points.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fraudsters use a number of methods to empty the bank\naccounts of their victims, but the one that was used to empty the bank account\nof BBC Rip-off Britain presenter Gloria Hunniford was unusual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A woman who did not look like Hunniford walked into at a Santander\nbranch in Croydon North End and told the bank official she was the TV\npersonality. Banker Aysha Davis did not know who Hunniford was and was duped\ninto handing over \u00a3120,000 from her account convinced by two \u2018relatives\u2019 who\naccompanied the woman. She had Hunniford\u2019s bank details and a bank card in the\nname of Mary Winifred Gloria Hunniford \u2013 the full name of the BBC presenter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gloria Hunniford alerted the bank when she saw her bank\nstatement and eventually the culprits were arrested and convicted of fraud\nwhile the bank refunded the cash. It\u2019s an unusual case for its brazen nature\nbut if the fraudster had known the pin number of Hunniford\u2019s card she could\nhave used a cashpoint \u2013 which is why you should guard against anyone trying to\nsee your pin number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The majority of card fraud is by remote purchases. The\ncriminal has a stolen card and orders goods on line (usually high value) to be\ndelivered. That way they only need to read out the number to the store salesperson\nor if they have the password and username they can simply fill in an online\nform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
