Checkaco Consumer News: forced labour, data collections, long delays for orders and masses of complaints – why some people avoid Chinese online firm Temu
By Rupert Bridgwater: There’s an old saying, “if it’s too good to be true then it isn’t.” The saying is very apt when it comes to Chinese online importer Temu who have been flooding the market with unfeasibly cheap products. Not the sort of prices you might see in a sale but literally a fraction of the price from UK competitors – like a tenth in some cases.
Temu has been in the news due to their attempt to sue a rival Chinese online retailer Shein for sharp practice – by tying in some suppliers to exclusivity deals. Nothing new in that – but both have been accused of hoovering up their customers’ details to sell to other companies – and even offering up to £50 for even more details from customers in Temu's case - until a sudden u-turn on the offer last month due to bad publicity and the authorities taking a look at their terms and conditions. The fact they even considered the idea says all you need to know about Temu some would say.
The firm has had hundreds of complaints in the last year as customers complain about the quality of the products, lateness of delivery and stuff not turning up when promised. Some customers have even questioned whether Temu is really a scam since they have so many dodgy aspects to the way they trade – in the USA a Congressional report said the firm failed to maintain compliance to import and trading laws and also used forced labour. And worse still some people suspect Temu of using political prisoners in China's Xinjiang region to manufacture goods.
So, the next time you click on Google Shopping to look for something be aware of Temu and their low prices. Remember the old saying, “if it’s too good to be true then it isn’t.”
